... ran from Italy's west coast, some ten miles south–east of La Spezia, to the east coast at Pesaro (between Rimini and Ancona). It followed the Apennine mountains for much of its length, passing about 20 miles (30 kilometres) north of Florence.
Its west coast extremity is very close to the place where Percy Bysshe Shelley drowned in 1822. He was living near La Spezia at the time.
